*The Mayflower landed at Massachusetts in December, 1620, the survivors founded the Plymouth Colony. *The settlers who founded Plymouth were Pilgrims. *The Pilgrims were Christians who fled England to have the freedom to practice their religion. *It is believed that John Alden, a carpenter, set foot on a small rock on shore. There are no records to prove this, but this rock became known as Plymouth Rock. *The Mayflower, which sailed from Plymouth, England, in November of the year 1620 actually landed at Cape Cod in Massachusetts before again setting sail and landing at what would become the Plymouth colony. The Pilgrims drew up an agreement called the Mayflower Compact which was signed on November 11, 1620. This compact pledged allegiance to the King of England but allowed the Pilgrims to form its own government and establish laws that were in their best interest. John Carver was the very first governor of the Plymouth Colony. *The important leaders of the Plymouth Colony were William Bradford, William Brewster, and Miles Standish. During the first winter of the Plymouth Colony about 45 of the 102 settlers died from scurvy and exposure to the harsh winter. Only 53 people were alive in November 1621 to celebrate the first Thanksgiving. *Thanksgiving, which became a national holiday in 1863, is celebrated in America each November to remember the First Thanksgiving. *The first Thanksgiving was celebrated with the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians. *Squanto helped the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians understand each other. Squanto had been a slave in England and knew the English language as well as his Native American language. |
