*The United States Government's seven most important historical documents include: the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, the Federalist Papers, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Emancipation Proclamation, and Gettysburg Address.

*On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was approved the by Continental Congress. The Declaration of Independence stated that the 13 colonies that fought against Great Britain were no longer part of the British Empire and were independent states.

*Before the Constitution was created, there was the Articles of Confederation, actually considered the first constitution of the United States, written and approved by the first thirteen states on July 12, 1776.

*The Federalist Papers were written and published during the years 1787 and 1788 in several New York State newspapers to persuade New York voters to ratify the proposed constitution.

*The U.S. Constitution written in 1787 is the document that created the present government of the United States. The U.S. Constitution went into effect in 1789, and established the three branches of the U.S. government.

*The first ten Amendments to the Constitution, established the rights of United States citizens.

*President Abraham Lincoln issued the Video: Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, and it became effective on January 1, 1863. It proclaimed the freedom of 3.1 million of the nation's 4 million slaves, and immediately freed 50,000 of them, with the rest freed as Union armies advanced.

*On November 19, 1863, at the dedication of the National Cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the American Civil War (July, 1863) Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address.
